Conference Theme:

Breakthroughs of Area Studies and ASEAN

in the Era of Homo Untact

COVID-19 is changing our daily lives and affecting international relations as well. Our desperate way of coping with the pandemic is represented by wearing a mask and minimizing human contact. Many people expect that the new normal that will appear after COVID-19 is conquered will not return to the life of the past. Humanity living in the new normal era would be named 'Homo Untact'. Homo untact, where physical distancing has become commonplace, will develop a new type of contact method. Information and communication technology (ICT) led by the fourth industrial revolution will further develop in the direction of replacing and supplementing human contact in the non-face-to-face era of homo untact.

As such, the push for social distancing and the increase of non-face-to-face contact will influence on all areas of human lives in the new era. Accordingly research on new concepts and methods is required in the field of area studies, which is deeply rooted on the characteristics of geographic boundaries and interrelationships. The changes of the spatial concept according to the progress of science and technology, and the reconsideration of the conventional field research methods of travel and participatory observation urge us new breakthroughs in the field of area studies.

Come to the regional concerns, ASEAN, founded in 1967 and run for more than 50 years, has served as a platform that connects regions and the world through various meetings and dialogues. The ASEAN Community, launched in 2015, contains the vision of the future Southeast Asia region. Research on the ASEAN's role in coping with the COVID-19 outbreak and the ASEAN's future vision in the post-COVID-19 era will leave important implications in the field of Southeast Asian Studies.

In this context, the 2021 KIAS-BUFS International Conference is looking forward to the participation of fellow scholars, focusing on the above theme. KIAS-BUFS is a new name of ISEAS-BUFS from this year. The ISEAS-BUFS successfully conducted a 10-years-research project(2009~2019) sponsored by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The agenda of the research project was “The Recognition and Construction of Southeast Asia as a Holon: Building Southeast Asian Studies on Compounding Area Studies and Cultural Studies”. Now the KIAS-BUFS envisions a future research agenda and inherits the business of ISEAS-BUFS such as hosting annual conferences and publishing the journal, SUVANNABHUMI: Multidisciplinary Journal of Southeast Asian Studies.

The 2021 International Conference of KIAS-BUFS invites scholars who are interested in the theme, “Breakthroughs of Area Studies and ASEAN in the Era of Homo Untact”. Papers may be written on a broad range of humanities and social science. Papers on the following sub-themes are particularly welcomed:
