Roles and Functions of ASEAN Sub-regions:
For ASEAN Community, Developmental Cooperation and Regional Security
ASEAN sub-regional cooperation began in the 1990s, focusing on the trans-border domain of sharing economic interests. Sub-regional cooperation, which is promoted in line with the interests of transnational actors and various international capital inflows, has emerged as a new international cooperation scheme that possibly promote economic development and regional security at the same time.
The sub-regional cooperation in ASEAN region first took place in the Indonesian-MalaysianSingapore Growth Triangle (IMS-GT, 1989) in response to Singapore's proposal to create an economic hinterland. Since then, the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS, 1992), IndonesiaMalaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT, 1993), and Brunei-Indonesia-MalaysiaPhilippines East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA, 1994) have emerged as the sub-regional cooperation schemes.
Among others, GMS is a sub-region of great interest from the ASEAN community by responding to the ASEAN Integration Initiative (IAI) to address the development gap between the developed and the underdeveloped member countries. BIMP-EAGA is a sub-region of high interest to maritime ASEAN members by promoting the development of the underdeveloped peripheral areas. The two sub-regions are the areas of cooperation and competition among the ASEAN external partners. As a result, the sub-regional cooperation could have a great implication for the regional political security in the East Asia.
The KIAS-BUFS kicked off the 6-years-research project on 1 September 2021, funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
